Overview

This is a beautiful run passing the Lewis Cemetery and Mine, heading past Lake Nawahunta, and eventually climbing up to the summit of Stockbridge Mountain. Stay the night in the Stockbridge Shelter, complete with two fireplaces, but get there early as it fills up quickly.

Need to Know

There are a few stream crossings and you'll pass some wetlands, so in warmer weather some bug repellent is a must-have. When there's snow on the ground, microspikes or crampons are highly recommended as there are some really steep parts toward the summit and on the descent.

Runner Notes

You can run along the Nawahunta Fire Road, but the Long Path: Section 6 can be a bit tricky and steep.

Description

Run up from the Silver Mine Lake Parking Area on the Menomine Trail and make a right on the Nawahunta Fire Road. Pick up the NY/NJ Long Path: Section 6 up to the summit of Stockbridge Mountain. Heading down the mountain, pick up the Menomine Trail again, this time on your left (east). Take that back down to the fire road and back to Silver Mine Lake.

Flora & Fauna

When there's snow on the ground, you're bound to see deer and rabbit tracks.

History & Background

Near the beginning of the run, you'll pass through Lewis Cemetery with tombstones from the mid 1800's. Along the run, you can see the Lewis Mine—it's easy to miss in summer and fall, but you can't miss it in winter.

Solid quick little loop with a little bit of everything. Not much of a view from the top though with the trees so full.
