Runner Notes

The footing is pretty good, especially in the beginning section of the trail. There are slightly more rocks and roots near the middle of the trail where the Blue trail splits. The North Loop of the Blue trail (especially the part that is north of Day Pond Road) is the most technical section (rocks, short-steep hills, etc).

The trail is well marked with blue blazes and is easy to follow. There are also several signs and maps along the trail.

Description

This trail begins at the parking lot at Comstock Covered Bridge. After crossing the river via the bridge, the Blue blazed Salmon River Trail follows the river before heading uphill. At the top of the first hill, there is a small clearing that provides a nice view of the Salmon River below. The Blue trail continue steadily uphill and starts to approach a clearing with powerlines running through it. Although the Blue trail does not enter the clearing here, there is a yellow diamond trail that does enter the clearing and can be used as a shortcut that merges with the Blue trail again. After continuing to wind uphill through the forest, the Blue trail eventually reaches a split with the North Loop Blue trail continuing left and the South Loop Blue trail going right (there are signs and a map here). Taking the left fork in the Blue trail towards the North Loop eventually crosses the power line clearing (and merges again with the yellow diamond shortcut trail) before reaching the split for the Day Pond Brook Spur Trail (the short Blue-Red trail that leads down to Day Pond Brook Falls). The Blue trail then crosses Day Pond Road before winding through the forest and leading to Day Pond and the main Day Pond State Park parking area. This section has significantly more rocks than the first part of the trail. At Day Pond, the Blue trail continues past the end of the parking area and enters the forest once more. This South Loop section leads back to the split with the map and signs. From the split, the Blue trail can be taken back down to the Comstock Covered Bridge, retracing the steps from the beginning of the run (about 2mi).

Parking is available at the Comstock Covered Bridge parking lot off of Comstock Bridge Rd or at the nearby Salmon River Picnic Area (off of Gulf Rd). Alternatively, parking is also available at Day Pond State Park near the top of the loop.

Access to the Air Line State Park Trail is also about a mile away from the Comstock Covered Bridge parking lot.
