Creque Marine Railway and Powerhouse Ruins [Suggest Edits]

Most people don't realize that Virgin Island National Park isn't limited to just St. John; in fact, the vast majority of Hassel Island, off the coast of St. Thomas, is National Park territory! While Hassel island is overall elusive territory, its gems are even more obscure. Hidden along its coast lies what might just be the world's oldest surviving steam-powered marine railway!

The Creque Marine Railway, constructed in the 1840's by Danish investors, was used to move ships from the water to land in order for maintenance to be performed on the hull or propellers. Over time it became a highly successful ship repair business, and additionally served as a massive benefit to the US military during World War II. Unfortunately, by the 60's it was left abandoned, until 1978 when the National Park Service took over the island's management. Today it serves as a unique look into part of the history of the Caribbean.

Short Run: Hassel Island is only accessible by boat off of St. Thomas. Several historical kayak tours exist that can take you all over the island. The entire island has a major trail system that allows access to each of the island's historical monuments and landmarks.
