Runner Notes
Brown Bay Trail connects to the
Johnny Horn Trail and continues to Coral Bay, or treat it as an out-and-back.
Description
The Brown Bay Trail branches eastward through dry vegetation to a narrow strip of sand and coral rubble beach that is slightly off the main trail. An old cemetery lies almost directly across from the beach path, supposedly, but you may have to hack out the brush to find it.
If your destination is the beach for swimming and snorkeling, forget it. As of July 2019, the beach is a putrid, seaweed-infested dump.
About 15 minutes into the journey, the trail elevation rises to about 250 ft providing views of the British Virgin Islands. On the descent you'll be treated to views of Coral Bay, Hurricane Hole and the East End of St. John. Just before reaching the parking area, visitors will pass ruins of a 1900's cattle farm, uphill and adjacent to the Hermitage Trail.
