Overview

This iteration of the Bald Rock Loop includes all of the existing singletrack in the area and doubletrack that parallels future additions to the singletrack system. Eventually this loop will be nearly 100% singletrack and expanded in mileage.

Need to Know

This route is unmarked. There are numerous creek crossings and side roads which can confuse the unfamiliar.

Description

Begin at the Flat Hollow Trailhead. Take the Hillbilly Hayduke Trail to its upper terminus and then continue on Spring Hollow Road. Descend Spring Hollow Road and turn right (east) on Bald Rock Fork Road. Just after the Drive-By/Bob Marley Parking area look for an angling road on the left with a sign to "Chica Bonita." This is the Crags Loop Road. Take it all the way to the Sore Heel Trailhead and continue through to the right and pick up the lower end of the Sore Heel Trail and continue on it back out to Bald Rock Fork Road. Cross Bald Rock and take Pumpjack to Flat Hollow Arch Trail and take this trail to its intersection with Fire on the Mountain.

At this point, you can make the short side trip on Flat Hollow Arch Trail to see the arch, and then backtrack to Fire on the Mountain. Take this trail to Hillbilly Hayduke Trail, turn right and return to the Flat Hollow Trailhead.

There are numerous variations possible in the area. The clockwise direction seems to provide the best climbing to descending ratio and also makes navigation easier.

History & Background

The entire area is within an active oil field. Please avoid oil equipment and abide by all signage.
