Overview

At just over 67 acres, the Birmingham Botanical Gardens have so much to see and explore. This 2-mile loop is a designated walking and jogging path designed to allow users to explore the gardens at their own pace.

Description

This flat, easy loop is a great way to explore the amazing variety of the botanic gardens. With over 30 thematic gardens divided into three types (Gardens of Collections, Gardens of Nature and Gardens of Culture), there is something for everyone.

This loop starts from the main parking area (parking and admission are free) by the Conservatory and heads south past Garden Center through the Barber Alabama Woodlands, meandering through shaded woods before coming to a wide and well-packed path that leads to the southern end of the loop and the Japanese Garden. The red torii Gate is particularly picturesque in the fall when surrounded by the vibrant fall colors of the Japanese maples and other trees lining the path.

You then head back to the north, climbing ever so slightly, up to the north end of the park (and the high point of your loop). On the north side of the park, you'll have the opportunity to explore the rhododendron, fern, and camellia gardens. There are a few alternate and connecting paths here that you can choose to explore. You may accidentally get off the main loop, as the route isn't marked, but enjoy the chance to explore no matter where you end up.

The trail then loops back south, winding past the Bog Garden, passing in front of the Conservatory (definitely stop in if you have time!) and ends with a quick run through the Rose Garden before returning you to the start point.
