Overview

The Iron Hill Trail is a moderate 3.6 mile run along the shores of Lake Allatoona. The area features hardwoods/pine wood forest. There are scenic areas and unusual photo spots and great spots for watching sunsets. The terrain is slightly hilly with more level terrain on the southern route of the trail.

Need to Know

The trail is open all year round. The trail will be undergoing service projects by the Boy Scouts of America of the Atlanta Area Council Districts, Appalachian Trail, Foothills, and Silver Comet Districts all year round.

The park requires a parking permit of $5.00 per day or if you wish to purchase a season pass it may be obtained at the visitors center .05 mile north of the trailhead on Glade Road.

Runner Notes

The wide gravel terrain makes for easy running.

Description

Though navigating this pleasant loop isn't too difficult, there are many small off shoot trails to the lake front. It will be easy to see the main path, as it has a wide, gravel surfaced, and well maintained. The lake is lowered in the winter months from October to March which allows access to shoreline.

The Iron Hill Trail has been adopted by the Atlanta Area Boy Scout Districts of Appalachian Trail, Foothills, and Silver Comet for the ongoing stewardship of the trail and the former campgrounds. The service projects performed by the Boy Scouts will be completed year round. Feel free to ask about the projects and the scouts performing service.

Flora & Fauna

Longleaf pine restoration project / hardwood forest.

History & Background

The trail loops around a historic iron mine site which operated during the 1800's to supply iron ore for the growing Atlanta foundry industry.
