Monte Bello Open Space Preserve is open daily half an hour before sunrise to half an hour before sunrise to half an hour after sunset.

Need to Know

The trail is shared with bike riders, so be aware of what is going on around you as you run along the trail.

Runner Notes

The trail is relatively flat and free from obstructions, so it makes for a nice trail run. The trail is narrow, so be on the lookout for hikers and cyclists who may be sharing the trail.

Description

The Upper White Oak Trail runs along the ridge paralleling Page Mill Road and provides great views of the Upper Stevens Creek watershed. The trail begins at the Monte Bello Parking lot along Page Mill Road. It runs along the fence briefly before running away from the the parking lot.

Climbing gently, the trail makes its way toward Page Mile Road before it breaks back toward the woods. The trail enters the woods briefly, where shade from the sun is provided. The White Oak Trail departs to the left at roughly half a mile. White Oak drops down into the preserve and meets up with the Skid Road Trail and you can link up with the Stevens Creek Nature Trail and the Canyon Trail.

The Upper White Oak Trail emerges from the woods and passes through grass fields with great views. The Equestrian access to Upper White Oak Trail breaks off to the right at roughly three quarters of mile. The trail then descends to Page Mill Road and the park boundary.

When you get to the boundary, you can follow the Monte Bello Pond Trail down to Lori's Pond. You can also cross over the road and meet up with the Alpine Road Trail. When you are ready to get back to your car, you can retrace your steps back to the parking lot, enjoying the view as you go.

Flora & Fauna

Deer can be seen feeding in the fields in the evenings. After rainstorms, salamanders can be seen on the trails, so watch where you step.
