Description

A visit to Cedar Sink is the perfect way to experience both the above and below ground beauty of Mammoth Cave National Park. Situated in the southwest portion of the park, Cedar Sink is a dramatic example of a sinkhole. However, this gash in the landscape is approximately 300 feet in diameter, making it a great place to explore this unique geologic feature.

Like most of Mammoth Cave, this formation is a result of the surrounding karst landscape. In these areas, soluble rocks such as limestones are worn away by underground water sources. In some cases, this produces tunnels and caves. When those subterranean features collapse, the result is a sinkhole like Cedar Sink.

As you work your way around the sinkhole, there will be plenty to admire, from the lush forest at the top of the feature to the dramatic cliffsides that can be admired from the trail. Along the way, there are multiple viewing points where visitors can overlook various aspects of the sinkhole. Incredible views can be had at both the top and the bottom of the feature, and this is a highlight that you won’t want to miss!

Short Run: This is the perfect way for those who feel claustrophobic in Mammoth Caves' underground environs to enjoy the geologic wonder of the area. Accessed from a short trail, this area remains above ground and is accessible to most.
