The Tom Sloan Trail starts along the Mt. Lowe Road #2N50 about 0.2 miles above the campground. There is a wooden sign with "Tom Sloan Saddle 1.9" designating the start. It heads west, then north passing though oak forest and open chaparral. It then turns west again and gradually descends along a steep hillside passing through an area recovering from the Station Fire (2009). There are good views to the south and the upper portion of Millard Canyon. The trail ends at Tom Sloan Saddle where there is a five-way junction with the Bear Canyon Trail 12W08, Dawn Mine Trail 12W13 and a well used path heading west to Brown Mountain.

This trail is very useful for doing loop runs in the Mt. Lowe and Echo Mountain areas when combined with the Dawn Mine Trail 12W13.

The Tom Sloan Trail was beautifully restored by the Restoration Legacy Crew in 2018 and is now in good shape.

Oak and bigcone spruce provide shade in the first half mile. Most of the trail is in open chaparral of ceanothus, laurel sumac, yucca, manzanita. Watch for rattlesnakes.
