Alaska State Park: $5 parking fee or annual pass.

Overview

A classic hike and trail run from Lowell Point out to Tonsina Point on a well-maintained trail. A couple of bridges and the beach at the point make for a scenic after work or day run. Popular for salmon viewing as well once they start running.

Need to Know

Don't proceed further down the beach past the point unless you have intentionally timed the tides. Rising tides have trapped people on the wrong side of cliffed out sections.

Description

Park in the Caines Head State Park parking lot which requires a $5 fee or annual pass. Proceed out the back of the lot uphill onto a private dirt driveway. The trail quickly splits left (follow the runner sign) and heads down doubletrack until peeling right and uphill. All intersections are clearly labeled. After this, the trail is well-graveled with pretty stream crossings and rolling hills. A little over a mile in the trail starts heading downhill, switchbacking down to the creek below.

At the bottom, the trail crosses the first of two bridges, with cool sections of boardwalk in between. Right around two miles, you'll see a pavilion, bear box, and outhouse for campers. Proceed a little further and you'll end up on the beach. Enjoy the view before you turn around and head back the way you came.

Caines Head and cabins are further down the beach, and it's possible to continue on depending on the tides (low tide only).

Flora & Fauna

Loads of salmon swimming up the stream when the run is occurring. Bears and Bald Eagles are the usual per Seward.
