Description

The first third of the West Trail is a gravel road that winds beneath trees and through a wetland. On the other side, it gives way to a grassy road trace following a line of trees. Eventually, it heads north to end at the forest preserve boundary near Dunham Road. Look for birds and wildlife as you explore.

Flora & Fauna

Keep your eyes peeled for great blue herons, sandhill cranes, beavers, hawks, screech owls, and wood ducks along the first third of the trail. In regards to flora, expect to see black, bur, and white oak commanding the canopy, with pale-leaved sunflowers and smooth yellow violets peppering the undergrowth.
