This trail gets very few visitors, and the limited parking along the gravel road at the trailhead reflects that. Unlike the Lava Cast Forest Trail, this trail is unpaved and an out-and-back. You'll start off through the forest but soon enter the lava fields with views of a kipuka - an island of trees surrounded by lava. The trail then enters the trees of the kipuka and ends at the southern edge of the kipuka with some views to the Caldera.
