This run makes a great figure 8 shape using 4 trails, and culminating in great vistas from the top of Hogencamp Mountain. Along the way, you'll also pass by Cape Horn, Times Square, Pine Swamp, and Hogencamp Mines!

Need to Know

Take plenty of water and sunscreen in the summer months, as you'll be out on bald rocks for a good amount of time, and you'll roast. Plenty of insect repellent isn't a bad idea either, as you'll pass a few swamps.

This run starts at the Lake Skannatati Trailhead. Head up the Arden-Surebridge (AS) Trail (Red Triangle in white square blaze), passing some of the remnants of Pine Swamp Mine. Make a left down Dunning Trail (Yellow Square blaze) to head past Pine Swamp and more of the Pine Swamp Mine ruins.

Continue on Dunning past Bowling Rocks (a great lunch spot with nice views) and make a right when you reach Ramapo Dunderberg (R-D) Trail (Red Dot in White Circle blaze). Take this up Hogencamp Mountain and reward yourself with great views at the top! Soon, you'll pass Ship Rock, and not long after, head down a small scramble to Times Square.

Take another right and pick up the Long Path (Turquoise Rectangle blaze). Through this section, you'll pass Cape Horn (a giant rock formation) and another abandoned iron mine down the hill. Long Path will take you back to Lake Skannatati and the parking lot.

Flora & Fauna

Many hawks and buzzards can be seen from the bald rocks, and you'll find a deer here and there. Lots and lots of blueberry bushes grow along the way and make for great late summer snacks. Be sure you can identify the correct plants before you go eating berries.

History & Background

There are a few abandoned iron mines along this route. Look for the flooded entrances along the way.
