The park is open 8 a.m. to sunset. There is no fee when parking in the trailhead parking area.

Description

Pena Trail is a great trail that climbs to awesome views. It is typically combined with other Calero County Park trails to do a loop run. To get to Pena Trail from the parking area, take the Access Trail that ends at Los Cerritos Trail. Go right onto Los Cerritos Trail. After 0.4 miles on Los Cerritos Trail, a signpost marking the start of Pena Trail is reached. Go left onto Pena Trail.

Pena Trail immediately starts climbing as it heads into the tree studded grass hills of Calero County Park. As the trail climbs, the Diablo Range in the distance to the right/northeast, comes into view. To the left are wooded grass hills. Vallecito Trail is passed on the left, followed by the end of Los Cerritos Trail on the right.

After passing the Los Cerritos Trail end, Pena Trail continues climbing to reach its high point at the 0.6 mile mark. From here, the trail bends right and then, almost immediately, left. As the trail bends left, an awesome view unfolds—the wooded grass hills with a backdrop of the Santa Cruz Mountains in the distance. Mt. Umunhum at 3,488 feet can be seen.

While enjoying these views, the trail descends slightly to end at a trail junction with Figueroa Trail and Serpentine Loop Trail.
