“Hoop Hole Loop has two loops. The lower loop is 4 miles and skips the views from the ridge top & the extended loop is 9.”
— Roanoke Outside
This route features a unique figure 8 type routing, with runners completing two loops by the journey's end. Both loops offer beautiful views of the streams cascading over rocks and swimming holes. The longer loop climbs to the top of a ridge for scenic views of the surrounding mountains. One could try to reach certain cliffs from the ridgetop for more expanded views. The trail is very rugged and good footwear is almost required. Also, be very cautious as the trail is sometimes very difficult to see and the yellow blazes are sometime far apart.
If you need running supplies, Outdoor Trails on US 220 near the intersection with I-81 is a good option. Also any trip to this area is not complete without a trip to The Fountain sandwich grill in Ransone’s Drug store in the town of Buchanan. Step back in time or if you prefer to treat yourself to some of Virginia’s award-winning wines, the Botetourt County Wine Trail consists of three local wineries located along Rt. 220 which is only a few miles from Roaring Run.
