Overview

Adults and children alike will love exploring the blend of nature, history, and community at Possum Creek. Run together in one of Ohio’s best examples of a tallgrass prairie. It’s hard to imagine that this home for butterflies and bluebirds was once degraded farmland. Argonne Lake’s open vistas of woodlands and wildlife provide the perfect setting for fishing for catfish, bass, or trout. Youngsters will love visiting the farm to see the barnyard animals and learn about the food we eat. Camp overnight or picnic with family and friends. Discover remnants of the past along the Argonne Forest Trail. Come back often to enjoy the seasonal changes and make outdoor memories that will last a lifetime.

Runner Notes

This is a great trail run for the adventurous mud-runners. As the Orange Trail is the longest trail in the park, it gives trail runners the opportunity to push themselves appropriately.

Description

This is a longer, 4.3 mile trail that lets runners get a taste of everything that Possum Creek has to offer. Making a loop all throughout the park, the Orange Trail allows visitors the ability to see the remnants of an old amusement park in historical Argonne Forest, fishing ponds, Argonne Lake, and three very different prairies. The trail intersects and follows the Purple, Pink, Blue, Green, and Red trails, allowing visitors to explore other features of the park. The trail is relatively flat, but does have a fair bit of up and down along the way, though nothing lasting over a couple of minutes.

Flora & Fauna

As the trail highlights almost all of possum creek with large prairie and wooded sections, visitors may see many wildflowers and birds, as well as squirrels and rabbits.

History & Background

Argonne Forest contains remnants of an amusement park from the 1930's and 1940's. It was created by Null Hodapp and named in honor of the 322nd Field Artillery Unit that fought in the Argonne Forest in France during World War I. Argonne Forest Park was a popular hangout with a swimming pool, shooting range, baseball diamond, dance hall, auto racetrack, and cabins. Stop at the marked sites along the way to discover remnants of this park.

In between the top two fishing ponds on the Orange Trail. Good spot for some waterfowl or lurking Kingfishers, as well as an excellent fishing spot!
