Runner Notes

There is a half-mile steep and rocky section. It would be a difficult run in the summer months because of full exposure to the sun.

This trail starts at the end of Shadow Canyon Dr. in Sedona. It is commonly done as part of a loop run with the Brins Mesa Trail where Soldier's Pass terminates. From the parking area, the trail begins to climb gradually for about .25 mile when you reach Devils Kitchen, a sink hole with a large block of sandstone balanced on the side. About another .25 mile up the trail, you'll pass a series of seven potholes carved in the sandstone by water runoff.

The trail continues uphill and begins to get steeper. About one mile from the trailhead, you can see Soldier's Pass Arch. Because of the open country, this remains in view for another half mile as the trail begins to get very steep. The arch is difficult to spot but at mid-day you can clearly see light shining on the ground behind the arch. Access to the arch can be gained from the Brins Mesa Trail.

The trail begins to even out and turn back where it will end on the Brins Mesa Trail.

Getting forecast...

The trail description and the highlighted map do not match. The trail description is for doing just Soldier Pass trail as an out-and-back for a total of 4 miles. The loop that is highlighted on the map (and which I believe matches the profile and the summary stats at the top of the page) connects Soldier Pass trail to Brins Mesa to Cibola Pass to Jordan Trail. The Soldiers Pass trailhead is only open from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm and there is no where available to park when it is not open so if you want to go before or after that time you can access the loop via the Jordan Road Trailhead. The road into this trailhead has about 1/2 a mile of dirt road at the end with some rough spots but I was able to clear it in a Mini Cooper. The rest of my comment is in regards to the loop described above. This trail has beautiful views the whole time and has some bits of shade in the valley. Going counter clockwise you have steep climbs and longer gradual downhills though both directions have sections of about 1/4 mile - 1/2 mile each that are steep natural rock steps with loose rocks or gravel making it difficult to run. Otherwise the trail is runable and quite enjoyable. The total distance from the Jordan Road Trailhead is about 4.9 miles. May 30, 2016
