Lower Falls of the Yellowstone River [Suggest Edits]
Description
Water in Yellowstone is an important resource, most recognizable in the form of geysers and hot springs. However, Yellowstone is also home to various creeks, lakes, rivers, and waterfalls, many of which are incredibly scenic and powerful. The Lower Falls of the Yellowstone River are a great place to witness just how important water is in shaping the Yellowstone landscape.
While both the Upper Falls and the Lower Falls are worthwhile destinations, the Lower Falls are the most dramatic of the waterfalls on the Yellowstone River. Falling over 300 feet, the falls crash and roar on their way to the bottom of the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, and visitors of all ages will enjoy observing this incredible waterfall. From various vantage points, it's easy to see how the Yellowstone River has carved the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone over the centuries.
While multiple viewpoints for the falls exist, one of the best spots to take in the falls is located at the end of Uncle Tom's Trail on the south side of the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone. Though the route to reach the viewpoint may be strenuous as there is a series of steep stairs, the effort is worthwhile. Visitors will have great views of the full extent of the fall, as well as the Yellowstone River as it moves downstream.
Another spectacular view can be had at the Brink of the Lower Falls, reached by a trail of the same name. This overlooks places visitors right at the top of the falls where you can watch the water plunging 300 ft below you. This trail is located on the north side of the canyon and can be reached from the Grand Loop Road.
Either way that visitors decide to view the Lower Falls will be spectacular. Over twice the height of Niagara Falls, this dramatic feature should be on every visitor's list of must-see locations.
Short Walk: From the south side, take Uncle Tom's Trail out to a great vantage point, or head across the river to the north side of the canyon to access the Brink of Lower Falls Trail. Either way, a short run on moderate terrain is required.
