The Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone provides a breathtaking representation of the power of water, and there is no better viewpoint to take in this incredible feature than at Artist's Point. Located between Canyon Village and the Tower-Roosevelt area, the walls of the Grand Canyon open up and drop away from the lookout. At times nearly 3/4 of a mile wide and as deep as 1,200 ft, this incredible canyon was formed over thousands of years by the Yellowstone River. Sluicing through the sandstone rock in the area, the river carved 24 miles of spectacular canyon.

The colors in the canyon range from sandy buff to reds and pinks, dark browns and blacks, as each rock unit is revealed. Visitors can view the canyon from many viewpoints that dot the rim, though the Artist's Point view is one of the most dramatic. In the distance, the Upper Falls and Lower Falls can be seen, and the thundering Yellowstone River will seem small and far away.

Even from this distance, the power of the river is easily apparent, and the beauty of the region is awe-inspiring. It’s no wonder why this lookout is known as Artist’s Point, as it’s hard not to try to capture some of the beauty of the canyon from here.
