Norris Geyser Basin [Suggest Edits]

Description

A bit farther from the beaten track, visitors can head to the Norris Geyser Basin to take in the most rapidly changing and hottest geothermal area in the park. As with many basins in the park, the Norris Geyser Basin is home to a variety of different types of geothermal features. Fumaroles, hot springs, and the world's tallest active geyser can all be found in this basin. Acidic water is host to strange bacteria, which turn the outflows and runoff from the springs vibrant green and orange.

Take your time to explore the area, as Emerald Spring, Crackling Lake, and Whirligig Geysers all await. If you've made it to the Norris Basin, you'll want to watch Steamboat Geyser erupt. The tallest active geyser in the world, Steamboat throws water and steam 300 ft into the air with each eruption. You'll need a bit of luck to witness a major eruption, as Steamboat Geyser is entirely unpredictable.

Unlike the somewhat regular activities occurring in other basins, the Norris Basin sees geothermal disturbances, which can dramatically change the behavior of the features. Pools cloud, and violently boil, springs become geysers, and sometimes geothermal activity seems to cease altogether. While it's unclear why this occurs, the variability and seasonality of the area mean that visitors will often see slightly different behavior upon each visit.

Short Walk: A short run along well-maintained boardwalks makes this an easy to access gem.
