Maroon Bells-Snowmass Wilderness was one of five areas in Colorado designated as wilderness in the original Wilderness Act of 1964 which now comprises of 183,847 acres.

You'll have plenty of human company in Colorado's fourth largest Wilderness. This area exemplifies Rocky Mountain splendor with over 175 miles of trail that take users over nine passes above 12,000 feet, vast regions lie above the treeline, and long glacial valleys pointing to glistening alpine lakes.

With six peaks rising above 14,000 feet, this area draws mountaineers and runners by the thousands annually. The awesome, jagged symmetry of the twin 14,000 ft. the Maroon Bells, reflected in Maroon Lake, is the most photographed peaks in all of North America.

Camping & Lodging

Use Permits: There are free self-registration Wilderness Use Permits available at the trailhead, one at the parking lot and one at the wilderness boundary on the way to Crater Lake. Be sure to include your camping locations for each night.

Food Storage: First is bear-proof storage. The Bells is in bear country and due to an increase in use, increase in bear activity and a focus on safety we have in place an order that requires overnight runners to use IGBC approved bear-proof food storage containers. As a reminder of proper use of the containers; all food (including alcohol), trash, and toiletries must fit in the container.

Food & Drink

After the Run: Local Favorites

Up 4 Pizza The best cookie in the world. Try it!
Sam's Smokehouse The Brunswick stew is off the chain! Ask for Scott. He's one ballin' dude.
Ullrhof Large vanilla shake. Then walk to the bar. Add a shot of vanilla vodka and a shot of Kalua. Best $23 shake in Snowmass.
Lynn Britt Cabin Best food on the mountain
Hiking Trail, Aspen CO — (970) 923-8715
Il Poggio Ristorante Adrian, the bartender is terrific. And the pizza is great.
57 Elbert Lane, Snowmass CO — (970) 923-4292
The Stew Pot Stewpendous
Venga Venga Cantina & Tequila Bar The $6 draft beer doesn't even come in a glass. That's weak.
Eight K at Viceroy Snowmass Deviled eggs are out of this world, lobster risotto was a stand out. Hugo is a trip, being from Miami he brought a small slice of home to this mountain gem.
Highlands Alehouse Best beer selection in the valley.
133 Prospector Rd, Aspen CO — (970) 544-0015
Bonnie's White bean chilli is a must order
Aspen Mountain, Aspen CO — (970) 544-6252
Hickory House Substitute onion rings for fries. They come with a bad ass sauce too.
730 W Main St, Aspen CO — (970) 925-2313
Ajax Tavern Great happy hour!. Gotta have a locally raised beef burger.
685 E Durant Ave, Aspen CO — (970) 920-6334
Red Onion Get a "bear fight", it's a jager-bomb and an irish car bomb. Actually, get a few.
420 E Cooper Ave, Aspen CO — (970) 925-9955
Big Wrap Bring cash, they don't take credit cards. Go to an ATM, the food is worth it.
Paradise Bakery Snickerdoodle cookie or any ice cream..
320 S Galena St, Aspen CO — (970) 925-7585
Justice Snow's It was fun. Took a bit to get drinks as they are labor intensive, but yummy! Lots to choose from.
520 Grill The bison burger is among the best I've ever had. Chill place, close to the gondola, with good tunes and low (by aspen standards) prices. Highly recommended.
520 E Cooper Ave, Aspen CO — (970) 925-9788
campo DeFiori Try the lemoncello...yummy..
205 S Mill St, Aspen CO — (205) 764-5578
Aspen Overeasy The breakfast quesadilla is very good. Also try the freshly squeezed juices (make your own combo).
