Description

The Cave Trail is a short jaunt from the road to the campground to the Tom Bevill Trail. It is not terribly difficult overall but there are a few steep climbs on it, particularly at its start on the campgound road and at the stream crossings.

At the campground road, the trail starts on the south side of the road at a steep embankment, but it is a short embankement. In theory, the trail does cross the road here and continues north, but the northern section is a steep, rocky climb up to the Loop Trail. The cave from which it gets its name is a short run north from the road.

After the steep embankment at the road, the trail rolls and winds along a low hill and through an area damaged during the April 2011 tornado outbreak (it has been cleared out, of course) and has a short but steep descent just before crossing a bridge over a creek. After the bridge, the trail ascends again and comes to a closed park road and crosses it. It then continues winding along through some storm-damaged areas and crosses another stream. After the second stream crossing, it begins a sustained ascent up towards the Tom Bevill Trail, where it ends. The Spring Trail can be taken back to the closed park road or you can continue along the 3.4-mile loop of the Tom Bevill Trail.
