Description

Mount Tlaloc is the ninth highest peak in Mexico at 4,150 meters. It can be reached from several points around its base. This climb is marked from the town of Río Frío, which has very easy access from the Mexico - Puebla highway.
At the top of the mountain, there is a ceremonial center dedicated to the rain god, Tlaloc. Hence the name of the mountain.

Once a year, the Aztecs went up to the temple of Tlaloc to offer human sacrifices, mostly younger children. This was performed as an appeal to the god of rain to send them water for their crops.

The monolith of Tlaloc that is now in the museum of anthropology and history of Mexico City, after being lowered from this hill. It is believed that during the ceremonial center's heyday, there was a whole factory dedicated to carving statues out of stone.

Throughout the route there are very good views of the volcanoes Izta and Popo, in addition to the forests that surround the mountain.
