Description

The blazed trail starts from just inside the entrance gate of Fort McAllister State Historic Park off to the right. The trail starts on a dirt road and in a few hundred yards off to your left will be a more traditional trailhead where the trail narrows down to the width of an ATV track (wider than singletrack but not as wide as a dirt road).

The trail weaves through a relatively open area before crossing a bridge. The trail continues to weave through the forest with an optional quarter mile spur just after the first mile to a viewpoint looking over a creek and the salt marsh. Continuing along the main trail, the trail stays close to the tree line for beautiful sunrise views. The trail turns to the north and continues to wind back and crosses over a second bridge.

The trail is 3.1 miles if heading back to the Fort McAllister entrance and crossing back over the first bridge you crossed, but you could continue to do laps of the loop by taking a left to increase your mileage. There are several interpretive signs throughout the trail. The trail is usually well-taken care of, but depending on recent weather it could have mud or standing water. Please do your part to keep the trail in great condition by staying on the trail and getting muddy or wet instead of avoiding brief moments of discomfort which widen the trail and worsen the issue.

The state park also has camping available in case you are just driving through and visiting the area on a road trip.

Flora & Fauna
