Runner Notes

The 1.5-mile long downhill section is a very fun, bombing descent if you like technical trail and don't mind dodging crowds of hikers and mountain bikers.

Description

You'll begin climbing east from the intersection with the Old Mill Trail and the Border Line Trail. The trail is mostly smooth doubletrack with very moderate grades. About a half mile into the trail, you'll run through a stunning aspen grove, which is worth the trip in and of itself. Continue through the aspen grove for another half mile and reach the high-point in the Staunton State Park trail system.

The first mile of the downhill is wide doubletrack with moderate grades. Soon the trail narrows, becomes rocky, and begins to follow a creek. The final few miles are relatively unremarkable doubletrack that terminates in the parking lot.

New trails are being put in and existing ones are being changed at a rapid rate and are sometimes not reflected in the park maps. For up to date trail directions and information about new construction ask the park rangers, they are extraordinarily friendly and willing to help (seriously the most friendly park staff I've ever met by far).

Trailhead parking is abundant on weekdays, but will fill up before 9 am on summer weekends.
