Description

The Stormy Peaks Trail runs through multiple different land management zones. Its northern trailhead is located in the Roosevelt National Forest. The trail follows a moraine for more than a mile and then begins rising to provide spectacular views of Pingree Park and the Mummy Range.

The trail then crosses almost a mile of the Comanche Peak Wilderness as it climbs steeply to the northern border of Rocky Mountain National Park at Stormy Pass (11,660). On a clear day, views from Stormy Pass are absolutely stunning.

The trail continues down the southeast side of Stormy Pass and connects with the backcountry systems of the park. A favorite route of runners and backpackers involves being dropped at the Stormy Peaks trailhead, running through Rocky Mountain National Park over Stormy Peaks Pass, and exiting via the North Fork Trail (#929) to be picked up at the Dunraven Trailhead.

Stormy Peaks trailhead accommodates approximately 7 vehicles.
