Overview

100-mile ultramarathon through Steamboat Springs, CO

Description

Begin at the base of the ski area, in front of the Slopeside Bar. Proceed steeply up, up, up - the precise course will depend on construction. Join the Chisholm Trail to Four Points Lodge. Take Storm Peak Challenge Trail to the top of the Mount Werner Aid Station.
From the Mt. Werner Aid Station join Mountain View Trail (FS Trail 1032). Descend the ridge off Mt. Werner the Mountain View Trail will bring you to the trail junction with the Fish Creek Falls Trail (FS Trail 1102). Take a RIGHT onto FS Trail 1102 (heading east) to the festive Long Lake Aid Station.

Turn around the way you came until you come back to the junction with Fish Creek Falls Trail (FS Trail 1102). Take the RIGHT FORK onto it. Go down through the canyon. Eventually, you'll get to the trailhead and the Fish Creek Falls Aid Station.

Go back the way you came to Long Lake Aid Station.

From the Long Lake Aid Station, signs and flagging will direct you to the Continental Divide Road, which you'll take to the Summit Aid Station.

Take Buff Pass Road about 2.8 miles on to Flash of Gold, following dashes and cairns through rock outcroppings. Four and one-half miles or so from Summit will take you to Billy's Rabbit Hole Aid Station. Then you'll turn left onto a singletrack; proceed down Flash of Gold, along some power lines until you reach the junction with Spring Creek Trail. Continue until it you reach the Dry Lake Aid Station. Follow the course markings. There may be a bit of bushwhacking to get you there.

Section 7 - Proceed to Spring Creek Trail, after about 5.5 pleasant miles you emerge at Spring Creek Trail and Amethyst Road. Cross the road and join the trail to your left and follow this trail through town and emerge at the intersection of Fish Creek Falls Road and Third Street. Pay attention as you'll be crossing Lincoln (the main street through town). Signs will direct you to the Olympian Hall Aid Station.

Signs will direct you to Blackmere. Take Blackmere Drive and turn left uphill on Little Moab to the Lane of Pain to the steeply rolling Ridge Road. Markings will direct you to turn right on Stairway to Heaven, descend and turn right on Blair Witch then turn right on to Quarry Mountain Trail, which will take you back to the minimal Lane of Pain Aid Station. From there, take Morning Gloria and descend to Lupine then turn left on to Emerald Meadows to the Stables; turn left, pass the Yurt, and then back to Olympian Hall Aid Station.

This section is the reverse of Section 7 to the Dry Lake Aid Station.

When you leave the Dry Lake Aid Station, join the Ditch Trail that contours above the Soda Creek Drainage, turning right at the junction with Grouse Trail (at about 1.3 miles). While going up pay attention to white painted dash marks and cairns that mark the sections of trail that cross over large sections of granite. When the trail returns to rock, continue to follow the cairns and dash marks. At about 4.5 miles you'll reach Buff Pass Road; turn LEFT on Buff Pass Road for a very short ways (less than .2 miles). Markings will direct you to Flash of Gold where you'll turn LEFT. Billy's Rabbit Hole will be about 6.3 miles from Dry Lake. After approximately 4.5 miles you'll reach the Summit Lake Aid Station.

From the Summit Lake Aid Station head east until the junction with the Wyoming Trail (FS Trail 1101). Go south on the Wyoming Trail. Stay on the rolling trail for about 6 miles. Make your way to the four-way junction with the Percy Trail and turn right (west) on to Fish Creek Falls Trail, (FS Trail 1102). Go another 1.7 miles or so to the Long Lake Aid Station.

Continue on, veering left when you reach the junction with the Mountain View Trail (FS Trail 1032) and climb up to the Mt. Werner Aid Station.

It's about 6.4 downhill miles to the finish - right down in front of Slopeside. Down Storm Peak Challenge, past Four Points Lodge, to the Why Not Road, to some singletrack, and then the finish.
