Runner Notes

I have seen local high school track students running on this trail. It can be muddy and the stream crossings may be slippery.

Description

The trail takes off from the north end of the Kilchis River County Campground Day Use Area. Park in the Day Use are and head upriver following the gravel track.

The trail heads into the Kilchis River valley, a large parcel of land owned by Tillamook County but not developed. Following closely along the river bank, the trail is seasonally muddy and somewhat overgrown.

The trail crosses Gilmore Creek, School Creek, and Washout Creek. You may get your feet wet trying to hop from rock to rock, depending on how high the water is running. The path up the creek banks can be steep.

It's easy to lose the trail in the ferns under the old-growth Sitka spruce grove. Continue on and slightly to the left to stay on the trail after climbing out of the stream bank.

Come out in a fairly large elk meadow lined on either side by huge old trees. Here the trail peters out and gets lost in elk trails. Turn around and enjoy the run back along the river.

Flora & Fauna

Sitka spruce, sword fern.
