No facilities are available at the trailhead. The area is owned by Carrizo Plain National Monument and is administered by the Bureau of Land Management.

The trail begins at the small parking area (parking area and the surrounding dirt roads are impassible when wet). Follow the trail to the wash; the trail turns right and left. Turn left a short distance to see the impact a major earthquake had on the streambed in 1857, then return to the right path to see more of the earthquake's impact on the stream and surrounding area.

A pamphlet at the trailhead (also downloadable from ceo.scec.org/wallacecreek/pdf/) tells the story of the earthquake and is useful in visualizing the shifted plates.
