Overview

Route with a fair amount of variety; some singletrack, some roads, couple of places with nice water views. Several options in the area to make the run longer or shorter.

Need to Know

Free parking at start of the trail.

Description

Park at Kettles Recreation Area. The trail starts out with a moderate climb through forest for about 0.5 miles, when you'll reach a road. Turn right, go to the right at the "Y" junction, and stay on Main Line until reaching a road. You'll pass a gate at 1.2 miles. Turn left on the road just past the gate.

A few hundred yards past the gate, go right on Kyle's Kettle. Kyle's Kettle is narrow and steep and up and down in places. At a little over 2 miles, the PNT will be a sharp left. After about 0.5 miles on the PNT, you'll reach a parking area, and there are some nice water views.

After pausing to admire the view, turn left and take the Bluff Trail. This section is partly exposed with nice views and a steady climb for about mile, when you'll reach an old artillery placement. Stay on the Bluff Trail past the campground on your left. You'll come out on a road (same road as earlier, different place); take the road back to the Main Line trail that you came up and back to the parking area.

Flora & Fauna

Typical PNW forest. Saw a deer the day I did it.

History & Background

Former army base and artillery position.

Lookout out of the FC/BC Station. No, there were not guns mounted in here, just high powered telescopes.

The FC/BC Station as seen from the trail. It looks like something from Star Wars!
