Need to Know

A Discover Pass or daily fee is required to park. During the winter months, an annual or day Sno-Park permit is also required. There are flush toilets open year-round in the park, and a vault toilet located at the end of the trail.

There are two nearby cafes, The Anatone Cafe 4.0 miles north in Anatone, and Boggans Oasis, 10.0 miles south, on the shore of the Grand Ronde River.

Description

The trailhead is down a wide doubletrack road past the park teepee campsites. The entire trail surface is well-packed and even.

At the beginning, you'll run along a flat section for about 0.25 miles, coming across intersections with branching trails. Once past this section, the trail slowly starts to climb in elevation. Just after 1.0 mile of running, it switchbacks to give exposure on the south face of Puffer Butte. At 1.5 miles, the trails intersects and coincides with Butte Climb, before getting to the panoramic view point at the top along with a warming shelter with a fireplace and firewood.

Camping is allowed at the warming shelter. From the viewpoint, you can see Hell's Canyon to the east, Wallowa Mountains to the south, and Umatilla National Forest to the west. This turns into an intermediate groomed cross country skiing trail in the winter.

Flora & Fauna

You'll see Ponderosa Pine, Western Larch, Grand Fir, and Douglas Fir trees. It is very likely to see White Tail Deer and, during the summer, people do see Black Bears.
