The Bureau of Land Management Taos Field Office has temporarily closed the La Junta Trail at the Wild Rivers Recreation Area to the public. The closure is required to address potential safety concerns on the trail. The closure will remain in effect until further notice. La Junta Point Overlook and Campground will remain open during this time. Visitors will be able to access the River Trail and the lower parts of the canyon from the Little Arsenic Springs Trail.
Need to Know
This trail is closed indefinitely due to rock fall and erosion damage.
Description
This trail is one of three that makes the descent from the plateau to the river. The La Junta Trail makes a particularly steep descent, using stairs and handrails, from the La Junta Overlook and Campground to the confluence of the Rio Grande and the Red River. It was closed in May 2018 due to damage from rockfall and trail erosion. The BLM asks the public to respect the closure of the trail for their safety.
