Need to Know

Bogs roads are narrow, sandy, and two-way, multi-use, so look for other vehicles, horse-back riders, motorcycles, walkers, etc.

Lakehurst Road does not have a shoulder in some areas and cars zip by quickly, but it has fantastic views of the cranberry bogs on both sides of the road in this stretch. The General Store is open weekends from 10-4 and seasonally on Fridays from 10-2 when the jug band practices, has drinks, snacks, bathrooms, guidebooks, and maps.

Description

This trail leaves the General Store, passes several historic village buildings, the water tower, passes along the side of the Blueberry Triangle Field (open for picking), through the Pinelands woods, through the intersection where the village Florence used to stand, to the sand former airstrip.

Here, it turns toward Union Pond, a shallow reservoir for the Cranberry Bogs that fills with waterlilies in the summer. Ride or run along the edge of the pond to the former cranberry bog and cross over to Rome Pond, where Rome Village used to stand. Follow along the edge of Rome wetlands and active cranberry bogs to Lakehurst Road. There is a small pull over area just before Lakehurst Road to park a vehicle and you can start/end here.

Flora & Fauna

Cranberries, blueberries, oaks, maples, pitch pine, Atlantic White Cedar, grey birch, great blue heron, eagles, northern harriers, migrant birds, chickadees, turkeys, deer, turtles, frogs
