Description

After entering the monument through a short tunnel into the crater itself, you can run up a 0.75 mile (1.1 km) trail from a parking lot in the crater to the rim, up a couple flights of stairs, through a tunnel and an old coastal artillery to the summit. The trail is very popular and not difficult, but the climb can be a little much for the average couch potato. Bring plenty of water.

Flora & Fauna

Dominant plants are the kiawe, a relative of the mesquite, and koa haole. You may see some of the common introduced birds such as cardinals, doves, and sparrows.
