Overview

The Pomo Canyon Trail follows an ancient trading route of the Pomo and Miwok people. The path weaves through lush redwood forests, oak woodlands and open grasslands, crossing seasonal streams en route to the ocean at Shell Beach.

At the summit of Red Hill, you'll have sweeping panoramic views of the lower Russian River, Willow Creek, the town of Jenner, and the serrated coastline.

Description

You can park at Shell Beach for free until sunset. Cautiously cross Highway 1 to the gate where a sign reads Pomo Canyon Trail.

The first portion of the trail is mostly uphill but about halfway through the Pomo Canyon Trail it flattens out. You'll eventually reach a forest of old-growth trees and ferns. The trail exits the forest and you'll see up to a sign noting Shell Beach, Pomo Canyon, and Red Hill. Turn sharp there to head onto Red Hill Trail.

Red Hill will provide some more uphill climb for a while. You'll cross a bridge and as you approach another forest, you'll come to a turn on the trail with signs designating what leads where. It is highly recommended that you take this turn, as it leads to the top of Red Hill which offers amazing views. This second old-growth forest is a perfect place to rest in the shade and bring some peacefulness into your day.

After you've climbed to the top of Red Hill, take a breather and enjoy the cool breeze and beautiful views - it's all downhill from here. You can either head back and take a left at the turns previously mentioned to pass through the forest twice, or continue forward down the hill to save some time. Red Hill will eventually meet back up with Pomo Canyon Trail where you'll continue to descend to the Shell Beach parking lot.
