Foot traffic only, keep pets on a leash, leave no trace, and park only on the pavement. Check the monument sign at the entrance to the trail for other rules.

Runner Notes

This is a soft surfaced trail consisting mostly of sand, which easily gives way to thousands of small roots that shoot their way across every part of the trail. Watch your step or you'll likely find yourself inspecting the local flora up close.

Description

This trail begins at a small parking area in the middle of the camping loop. There is a monument sign with trail information located near the entrance as you enter the forest. This trail has a small bit of slope, but nothing that would be considered difficult. The path is 3 feet wide and is formed of sand which is often displaced during times of rain, exposing many roots that crawl across the trail. Keep a watchful eye where you step to avoid tripping. The trail winds around a small cove of the lake, taking you over two small bridges and giving you access to great views and wonderful birding opportunities.

After coming around the cove you find yourself at fork in the trail where you can follow either direction to loop back around and then retrace your original path back out to the parking lot. This trail is also utilized to reach the primitive campsites at the state park. Overall, it's a nice run that provides great views, excellent birding (including a wildlife viewing blind) and even features a composting toilet at the halfway mark near the fork in the trail.
