Runner Notes

Deep sand in some places will definitely slow your pace.

Description

The Black Rock Canyon Trail can be accessed from the Black Rock Canyon Trail parking area off of Canyon Rd.

From the start, runners will face a steady, but not terribly steep climb that is unrelenting for the length of the trail. The lower portion of the trail is wide and sandy as you are running in a wide wash. The trail is marked here with clear signs.

At 0.6 miles, you'll come to a junction with the Short Loop Trail on the left. Continue straight. Shortly after this, the trail will cross the Burnt Hill Trail. Continue straight here as well, keeping to the wide wash. At about 1.3 miles, keep an eye open for Black Rock Spring; usually the spring is more of a collection of puddles or damp sand.

After this, the trail narrows toward the end as it climbs through some rock formations. Look for the wooden post with initials for either the Warren Peak Trail (WP) or the Panorama Loop Trail (PT). While the posts aren't quite as clear as the signs on the lower part of the trail, they are still sufficient to help you find your way.

Flora & Fauna

Pinyon, juniper and oak mixed with a few sparse Joshua Trees. Wildflowers, blooming nolina, and beavertail cactus in the late spring.
