Runner Notes
This trail is pleasant, quiet, and gentle, perfect for a trail run.
Description
Though most visitors visit the Black Canyon of the Gunnison to peer into the depths of the canyon itself, there is a beautiful and unique landscape surrounding the area.
Visitors be able to enjoy this trail as it gently meanders away from the rim, opting instead to wind among juniper and pinyon trees. Along the way, a sprinkling of mahogany might be seen, and open meadows will be crossed as well. The scent from the various pines gives this route a distinctly desert feel.
As you run, keep an eye out for the full time residents of the area. Small birds and mammals depend on the nutrient rich pinyon nuts and juniper berries for survival, and away from the hubbub of the visitor's center, you're more likely to see them here.
Flora & Fauna
You're likely to see swallows, squirrels, and swifts nibbling on pine nuts and berries on this trail.
