Description

From the South Prong Campground Parking Lot, the trail begins. The trail mostly follows dry river bed, with small signs along the way to let you know which way to go. There's plenty of times to step off the trail and see some rock formations as well.

Around mile 2 the trail becomes steep and mostly on smooth rock. Make sure and pay attention to the very small signs on the canyon as it could be easy to lose the trail. One specific sign almost to the top of canyon has arrows that point both left and right, go right, as it will cut off a little time and frustration.

Once to the top of the canyon you get an excellent view of west Texas and Caprock Canyon State Park. The way down is quick and the singletrack is covered in a lot of vegetation so I would suggest wearing some pants. There is also a sign for Fern Cave on the way down. This quick .2 mile detour is worth checking out. The trail becomes straightforward once again, as you make your way back down on the canyon floor.

Flora & Fauna

Potential for bison and the start and end of the trail.

One of the many lizards that may be encountered in the area. This one was particularly stoic, allowing us to get very close for photos.
