Description

You begin by turning off of Sand Creek Trail onto Little Sand Creek Trail. (My GPS said it was 3.5 miles total.)

The first mile has a gentle incline but is relatively level ground, you make your way through an aspen grove and stay alongside the creek for the majority. The second mile gets a little more difficult with steep rocky sections and you start to gain elevation. You'll eventually make your way to a large meadow and that's where it gets tough.

You're right below the lake just 1,000' lower and you have to loop around. You make your way through several meadows and the last mile and a half is very steep and the trail is very overgrown, with the last half mile being a bushwhack through very thick brush to the lake.

My advice is to get level with the lake before you try to cross over, it's nearly impossible to climb up through that thick of brush. There are a few good camping sites close to the lake to accommodate a small tent or two (adhering to Wilderness Regulations)!

Unimaginable and stunning views. Even 13ers to climb like Cleveland Peak.
