Description

This is a steep, loose 4x4 road with incredible views of the La Plata's. From La Plata Canyon turn right at a well marked intersection to Columbus Basin. You'll cross the creek and start climbing right away.

The first portion of the road climbs steeply through the trees. At about the half-way point, you'll reach timberline and be rewarded with stunning views of Columbus Basin. However, the climbing isn't over, from this point you'll climb a couple of steep switchbacks. The grade mellows out as the road curves around to the north.

The road ends at the Columbus mine. The combination of the steep grade, loose road and high altitude make this a tough, but rewarding trip.
