Overview

It is easy to make this a little shorter or much longer. Add any of the nearby loops as desired. All the trails here are excellent, and each offers a little bit of history or a new viewpoint.

Runner Notes

If you don't like to climb hills, this area is much easier than starting as per Mount Falcon East Loop.

Description

From the upper parking lot, take Castle Trail and pass by Parmalee Trail. Enjoy some nice views and then take a right on Meadow Trail and another right on Tower Trail. This section is moderately steep and includes some steps, but has great views from an old fire tower near the top. Great place for a picnic!

Head down the hill and come to an intersection with the Parmalee Trail. Take a right and enjoy 2.5 miles of nice, somewhat secluded trail. The end has some rocky sections and several hundred feet of climbing but it's fairly wooded and cooler up here.

This is just one of many ways to connect the trails on upper Mount Falcon Park - be creative and make your own loop - you can't go wrong!

Flora & Fauna

Typical lower montane vegetation: ponderosa pine, douglas fir, a few aspen. Deer, bear, and mountain lions are known to roam the area.

History & Background

John Walker purchased 4,000 acres in this area in 1903 and built a house near the summit of Mount Falcon in 1909 (you can visit the ruins). Eight fireplaces, a music room, library, and 10 bedrooms made quite a grand house, but lightning struck and burned it to the ground in 1918.
