Description

Leaving Martin Creek Trail #429 head west towards the meadow. The trail soon splits, stay left as you pass through several prime camp sites. Staying level for a bit, the trail follows the eastern side of Cooney Lake but with no immediate lake access. Past the lake, the trail gains elevation, initially more moderately but ultimately very steeply. As you get close to the ridge below Staircase Mountain, don't forget to turn around and enjoy the view of Cooney Lake from above.
