Trail shared by Zander Göpfert

An out-and-back to view the less-visited Lower Whitewater Falls; part of the tallest chain of falls in the eastern U.S.

Zander Göpfert

Features River/Creek · Waterfall

Open dawn to dusk.

Overview

Whitewater Falls is one of the tallest chains of waterfalls in the eastern U.S. and the Lower Falls are not as frequently visited but just as impressive. This out-and-back run follows blue blazes to a constructed viewing platform for an optimal vantage point to see the falls, though visitors shouldn't expect access to the falls themselves.

Description

Follow driving directions to the parking symbol or Duke Power's Bad Creek Hydroelectric Station.

The trail heads along a concrete drainage line before heading up (left) into the woods to the north. After 0.3 miles, the trail heads down toward a river crossing with a couple bridges across Whitewater River.

On the north side of the river, the trail intersects with the Foothills Trail. Continue north (right), following blue blazes and good signage pointing toward Lower Whitewater Falls. This section of the Foothills Trail presents a pretty steady climb.

After just over a mile from the start, look for a connector trail on the right toward the wider Musterground Road section that continues east/southeast. Continue onto the Lower Whitewater Falls Trail as it bends around the western slopes of Whitewater Mountain.

Finally, the trail descends somewhat steeply before culminating at the wooden viewing platform. After enjoying this beautiful reward, retrace your steps back to the starting point.

History & Background

Whitewater Falls is made up of six individual falls. This area is co-managed by the USFS.
