Description
To begin the trail, start at the parking area. There is a public river access sign here to help find the small parking area. Once parked, cross the road and begin the run near the bike rack/park signs along the road.
A short way in you'll come to the Ohio and Erie canal lock on the left hand side of the trail. Continue past the canal lock until you reach the Ohio Electric Interurban tunnel. The rail ran from Newark to Granville and was opened in 1903. The tunnel is 327-feet long and was blasted through solid rock. The Central Ohio Railroad's interurban was short lived due to the popularity of the automobile, and the last car ran through the gorge in 1929.
This is an out-and-back trail, so head back toward the parking lot the same way you came in.
