From Santa Fe, proceed to Black Canyon Campground up the Hyde Park Road (SR 475). Pull over and park outside the fence at Black Canyon Campground. Please park outside the campground as parking spots inside the campground are reserved for paying campers. If you park inside, you'll be charged a fee.
Description
Half-mile approach to trailhead through the Black Canyon Campground. At camping site #4 in the upper loop of the campground, the trail leaves the campground and gently rises through a beautiful aspen and mixed conifer grove for another 0.5 miles. Bear to the left at the trail junction.
A slightly steeper stretch then goes up through mixed conifer trees, giving occasional views to the north. Just before you reach the ridge line, the trail makes a swing to the right and makes a loop and returns to the main trail and back to the campground.
This trail is heavily used due to its proximity to Santa Fe, the gentle grades, and the lovely views. It is an excellent choice for runners with small children. As you pass through the campground, please be considerate of the campers. Keep your dog on a leash and stay on the roadway.
