Description
This spur road off of the
Mt. Lowe Road #2N50 starts at a saddle where there is a junction with the
Middle Sam Merrill Trail 12W14.2 and the
Idlehour Trail 12W16. It gently rises for 0.2 miles and reaches Inspiration Point and a junction with the
Castle Canyon Trail #12W28. There is a restored shaded overlook with picnic tables, historical exhibits, and spotting scopes. It continues contouring around the north side of Mt. Muir and comes to a junction with the
Muir Peak Trail in 0.7 mile. The road continues heading southeast then makes a bend around the ridge and turns south ending at Panorama Point which has good views of the San Gabriel Valley.
This road is mostly commonly used to connect the
Middle Sam Merrill Trail 12W14.2 with the
Castle Canyon Trail #12W28. Also called "One Man and a Mule Trail", it was the site of a short railway with a mule pushing a car carrying visitors from Inspiration Point to Panorama Point.
Flora & Fauna
Mostly open chaparral of ceanothus, scrub oak, laurel sumac, chamise with occasional shade from oaks and bigcone spruce.
