NOTE: The Cook and Green Trail #959 was heavily impacted by the Miller Complex Fire that burned over it in the summer of 2017. The Forest Service and volunteers are doing what they can to stabilize and restore the trail but you should be vigilant for falling trees and rocks. Do not expect to see the diverse forest ecosystem that once characterized this trail.

The upper end of this trail can be blocked by snow between November and early June.

Description

From Forest Road 1040, the Cook and Green Trail #959 climbs easily in to the canyon of Cook and Green Creek and then contours above the creek for 3.5 miles to a wide spot next to the trail called No-See-Em Camp. There is easy access to the creek here and room for 1 or 2 tents but no other amenities.

Just past the camp, the trail makes a bridgeless crossing of Cook and Green Creek (be careful crossing here during high water), turns southwest, crosses Bear Gulch Creek (no bridge), then starts on a gradual climb up the west side of Bear Gulch. At 6.5 miles from the trailhead, the Cook and Green Creek Trail #959 crosses the head of Bear Gulch Creek (can be a slippery crossing at high water), then continues on for a short distance past a small spring to end at Cook and Green Pass and a junction with the PCT.

This trail can be combined with the PCT and the Horse Camp Trail #958 to form a 15-mile loop starting and ending at Forest Road 1040. This loop allows you to visit Echo Lake and enjoy big views to the south from the PCT.
