The trail begins tamely, weaving through open forest and over footbridges until the trail meets the beginning of the ridge and climbs in earnest.

Rock steps and wooden stairs lead you up the ridge. You'll gain glimpses of Elmore Lake as you climb higher, as well as the west-facing side towards Stowe.

The Balancing Rock landmark is a good indication that you are close to the Elmore Fire Tower. After this point, the trail will ebb and flow at a gradual elevation increase passing scenic overlooks until the fire tower.
